Building a Smarter Team with Social Media

May 19th, 2010

brain-763982-11Joshua-Michéle Ross writes for opposableplanets.com, and he talks about the importance of a mind shift from keeping up with technology to using technology to “subscribe to people you trust and follow their lead.”  Too often, business leaders are vulnerable to viewing social media as a waste of time or at best a free marketing tool.  The truth is that a leader today needs to view social media as a range of resources, but one of the most important is its ability to, as Ross states, make everyone in your organization smarter.

When you and employees in your business connect with other people –  especially other people who are well-respected in their respective fields and who use social media strategically – you gain access to tremendous resources.  Via Twitter, you can find out not only what a journalist is saying, but who she is reading; on Facebook, not just status updates but personal interests, hobbies, and educational networks; on LinkedIN, not just one person’s professional experience, but the backgrounds and resources of all of their connections.

As a leader, if you’ve looked at social media and then looked way, consider a second glance.  Beyond the snappy quotes and pretty pictures, there is a wealth of opportunity in building a better team by being willing to “follow” and “friend” and “connect.”

What’s Your Business “MacGuffin”?

March 23rd, 2010

Progressity co-hosted a great live teaching call last night with Bob Burg (www.burg.com), and we loved Bob’s introduction of the word “MacGuffin” into our thinking about business!

What WAS that movie about, anyway....?

What WAS that movie about, anyway....?

The term MacGuffin is defined as ”a plot element  that catches the viewers’ attention or drives the plot of a work of fiction.”  Wikipedia links it most profoundly with the work of director Alfred Hitchcock, where perhaps the plot seems driven by one thing, often a mysterious object, only to be found to be driven by character motivations much deeper and more complex than they appear on the surface.

Think about it, said Burg.  “Do customers really want a quarter inch drill bit, or do they want a quarter inch hole?”

It seems simple, but anyone can get lost in the concrete aspects of product and service delivery without keeping what the client really needs front and center.

Is the client asking you for a new web site, or are they seeking your help reinterpreting and communicating their corporate identity?  Are they purchasing a logo, or are they partnering to reposition themselves authentically in an evolving market?  Do they need to raise money, or do they need help defining their unique value proposition to a new audience of investors in their mission?

At Progressity, we believe in this kind of purpose analysis, and thanks to Mr. Burg, we are thinking about it more than ever when we lay out our work with clients.

We hope our recurring teaching call series is helping you think about new ways to interpret your work and new ways to be more effective at what you do.

We’d love to hear about your “MacGuffin Moments” as your own shifts in thinking occur!

True Genius

February 15th, 2010

When we received this article by Lou Solomon, we immediately asked her if we could repost it on our blog at Progressity!  She graciously said yes; we hope you enjoy her reflections on “left-brained” and “right-brained” thinking, and the importance of honoring and USING the whole mind.

Recently I heard Hugh McColl, Jr. speak with candor about growing up in Bennettsville, South Carolina, his career successes and his mistakes. Those of us in the audience listened and laughed as though we were in the company of a dear friend.

Extraordinary people have way of appealing to the common sense buried in us all that recognizes the knowing of the heart.  We love that rare moment when someone breaks through the surface-speak in the boardroom and says something deeper. Everyone knows something real has happened. It gives other people permission to speak from the truth of their own experience.  Full self-expression can be infectious.

Many of us have this outdated idea that speaking from the heart is about getting sentimental and sugar-coated.  But speaking from the knowing of the heart takes courage.

Chances are, at some point in your life, you’ve contemplated a job, move or partnership and said, “Something just doesn’t feel right.”  Perhaps you over-ruled yourself and went ahead and did it anyway— and sure enough, it was the wrong move.  The person was a crazy-maker.  The job actually was too good to be true.

Why are we not encouraging business people to call upon the resources of their imagination, gut knowing and the knowing of the heart?  Because the computer-like, cognitive aspects of the brain still rule in the “serious” disciplines.  No doubt, these aspects are exquisite.  But they are not the sum of our genius.

In 1981, neurologist Roger Sperry won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work in identifying the “Left Brain” to be the home of calculations, math and logical abilities.  The “Right Brain” is responsible for imagination, vision and creativity.

We have over-identified with our Left Brain. The most formidable human beings among us have the whole brain, gut instincts and the knowing of the heart working together like a grand symphony.

The oldest Chinese symbol for ”mind” is a drawing of the heart.  At the Institute of HeartMath, researchers have identified two major neuronal networks in the body in addition to the brain.  Certainly the largest network is the brain.  But there are two other sizable clusters of neurons, in the intestinal track and in the heart chamber. There is a physiological connection for gut knowing and the knowing of the heart.

The good news is that people are waking up. Noted researchers, educators and authors are leading the way.  We are beginning to understand that it is our life-long assignment to draw from all centers of knowing to experience the height of our giftedness.

Happy Birthday Progressity

October 6th, 2009

group

American athlete, Jamie Paolinetti once said, “Limitations live only in our minds.  But if we use our imaginations, our possibilities become limitless.”  Eight years ago today, I turned something from my imagination into reality and started a marketing strategy firm.  It’s amazing how we’ve grown and evolved since then.  What I know for sure is that manifesting one’s dream takes an incredible amount of hard work and a whole host of people who support us along the way.  Today, I relish in the fact that I live a dream life.  And I am filled with gratitude for my amazing staff, our incredible clients and the expert business advisors and partners who have helped us to be successful.  Carpe Diem!

Ahoy Mateys!

At Progressity, we serve clients throughout West Virginia and beyond, and this week we travelled to beautiful Roane County to meet with a new design client about their website strategic development.  Even our energetic team needs to eat, and on the way home we stopped at an incredible find of a restaurant, Crabby Patti’s.  Jim and Patti Wilson, natives of Maryland, are doing a booming business keeping customers satisfied with hearty sandwiches, fresh seafood, and creamy soups.  Nicknamed “Bayside of Ripley,” this eatery serves up amazing lump crab cakes, up to a half pound each!  Fortified and happy, we journeyed back to Charleston, grateful for not only those we serve, but those who occasionally serve us.

Kathleen and Thorney

In December 2007, photographer Thorney Lieberman approached Kathleen DuBois about helping him make an idea a reality.  Thorney wanted to develop a photographic exhibit of West Virginia coal miners, which would be a powerful way to put a human face on the industry.  His request from Kathleen was to help him develop a project plan, key contacts and funding.  On June 23, 2009 Thorney opened his first full exhibit at the West Virginia Cultural Center!  His show will eventually expand and travel nationally.  The Progressity team is very proud to work with such talented, innovative individuals like Thorney.
